Linux Ubuntu installation on Inspiron 6000
This is my first posting after went back from Indonesia last week. Also first posting using my new system Dell Inspiron 6000 which I custumized it's spec a few weeks ago during COMEX 2005. This is also first posting from Ubuntu Linux system.
I am not a linuxer, just want to try something different. Ubuntu, maybe this word quite strange for us.Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". I actually never heard before until someone posted about it on a community mailing list. I have downloaded many distro Linux, from Debian 7 CDs to Knoppix but never saw the way of distribution like Ubuntu. To promote Ubuntu to the world they provide a link which is we can get Ubuntu CD distribution free and we can request multiple CDs for our community.
I tried to request 11 CDs for three different machines, x86/AMD, AMD64 and PowerPC (Mac), and I got what I have requested, mostly they are for x86 machine.
It is my second time I install Linux distribution. First installation was using Red Hat linux, arround four years ago and actually I didn't use it for any application. Install only, that's all. Now, I want to a bit serious to use Ubuntu, hence I set it up as default operating system instead of Windows XP Professional .
How actually the experience using Ubuntu Linux ? So far, I cannot explain in details, because now I also still play arround with this one. I am still not familiar with Linux generally, even for it's GUI/XWindow. Maybe for the first time, better to explain how the installation was. Later on, maybe, I can post on how the experience using Ubuntu or Linux generally.
Basically, installation of Ubuntu Linux is easy, just put your installation disc on CD-ROM drive and boot your sistem from it. I used installation disc that was burned by my self using it's image (.iso) file I downloaded from Ubuntu site. I use Ubuntu Linux 5.10: The Breezy Badge.
I am not sure how long it takes to install one full CD into the system, maybe arround 1 hour. I was very sleepy at that that time, could't fully concentrate on the installlation process. Maybe you can imagine I installed it at 2.00 am and working more than 12 hours at that day. I created 10 Gigs space for ext2 partition and allocated it just to try Ubuntu linux.
First time use Ubuntu ? No, actually I already used it before in internet rental kiosk in my hometown, Purbalingga. So it is not really a surprise for me after finished the installation.
After finishing installation, basically we need to know whether the installation is OK or not. My impression, for basic installation, Ubuntu do it for us automatically. Most of my hardware configuration is recognized by Ubuntu. For example, 1280 x 800 automatically selected and install proper device for it. I am not sure whether the correct driver for my ATI Radeon X300 or just use it's generic one. But so far so good, 3D screen saver looks quite nice there. USB also working properly, I can use my thumbdrive and generic multi card reader with fine. But not with SDIO port. When I insert SD card, seems like only gimmick port :). Touch pad also can be used, except it's vertical and horizontal scroll cannot be used like on Win XP. Sound card also fine configured. Together with CD drive, it can play CD-DA (when I writing this post, I was listening Peter Pan's album using my system. But, unfortunatelly, it cannot play DVD-Video. When it was loaded with Lord of the Rings DVD, DVD Drive seems not responding if I pressed open button. Totem Movie Player also become NG when try to play DVD that has been loaded before. I guess DVD-RW maybe cannot work properly
How about keyboard ? When I write this post using Firefox 1.06 browser, cursor sometimes jump to previous line(s). I am not sure it is because the keyboard's driver or one of it's application. For networking, I am using wireless Intel Pro set and it was easily configured. I am still trying to configure Bluetooth module. Firewire, LAN and modem port I thin it should work properly, because those items shown in the Device Manager, but I haven't tested it yet.
Installation package of Ubuntu including some basics applications for users. From my opinion, the applications are more than enough for most of users (Office application and internet). The more important thing is, it is legal and free and open source.
